Getting There

Begin your journey at the well-marked trailhead, located at the Cerro Catedral ski resort. The trail is easily accessible from Bariloche, making it a popular choice for day hikers and those seeking a more extended trekking experience. In the summer months, public buses (Bus no. 55) operate approximately once an hour between 7:00 am and 8:00 pm, commencing from the Bus terminal. The route takes you through the heart of Bariloche, alternating between Avenida Bustillo and Avenida Pioneros. Get off at the last stop. If you are driving you can park at resort parking at Cerro Catedral.

From the bus stop, search for a prominent wooden sign bearing the inscription ‘FREY’ in large letters, accompanied by a wooden-carved backpacker. The trail commences from this point. Follow the path away from the ski resort; after covering approximately 100 meters, veer onto the smaller trail indicated on the right. This trail intersects with the vehicle track after an additional 200 meters, then branches to the right. Keep a lookout for the small signs that guide you onto the main trail. Once on the main trail, you’ll encounter a well-marked path featuring sturdy wooden and metal footbridges spanning several small streams. This scenic journey lasts for about 2 hours until you reach the trail junction intersecting with the path from Los Coihues. Continue up the valley for another 1½ to 2 hours as the trail gradually ascends into the forest. Pass over the Van Titter stream using a larger metal footbridge, go past Refugio Piedritas (a small shelter), and emerge above the tree line for the final kilometer leading to Refugio Frey.

Take a break at Refugio Frey. Food and water is available at the Refugio. After you fill of the view return the same way.
